Fashion Photography in the 90's

Fashion in the 90's was a dichotomy of glamor and grunge. The decade gave us the definition of a modern Supermodel in Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell, as well as the street fashion, grunge inspired heroin chic of Kate Moss. The fashion photography of the 60's was called upon and reinvented in a darker and more cinematic way. Fashion photographers documented life behind the catwalk as well life on the streets. Notable photographers of the decade are Roxanne Lowit, Corrine Day , Herb Ritts and Terry Richardson, just to name a few.

Being a photographer I think the best way to illustrate the fashion imagery of the decade is to show you. Nothing speaks more clearly than a photograph. These are some of my favorites from the 90's as well as others that were inspired by the imagery of the decade.

If you would like to get an idea on how revolutionary the blending of music, street fashion and advertising was in the 90's, check out this article by the New York Times, published in 1996.

So, have I whetted your taste buds? Want to see what 90's inspired garments you can grab for yourself? You must come to Throwback 2010!
